Jon Stewart Exposes Fox News ‘Balance,’ Goes After Sarah Palin And Megyn Kelly (VIDEO)

Huff Post- First Posted: 03- 4-10 06:12 AM   |   Updated: 03- 4-10 07:55 AM

It looked like Jon Stewart was going for some of his bread-and-butter Sarah Palin jokes on Wednesday night, mocking her appearance on NBC’s Tonight Show and tossing in a little ribbing of Jay Leno.

But the quips about a Palin “Fair and Balanced” remark quickly turned into an amusing — if not scathing — indictment of Fox News programming, particularly host Megyn Kelly and her new mid-day program, America Live.

Stewart hounded the network about an apparent lack of balance, ranging from the show’s promos (showing a clean-cut man in a Jesus t-shirt evidently representing the right, juxtaposed with an “angry nose-ring liberal lady” pointing at his face) to the actual reporting and clips that only showed one-sided opinions from a very homogeneous group. He emphasized that this was one of the few programs held during the network’s allotted news time, as opposed to shows that are explicitly opinion.

The Daily Show segment ended with a flourish, showing clips that seemed to indicate an inconsistent approach at Fox News to polling, endorsing or dismissing polls depending on the results.

Stewart Schools Jim Bunning For Repeated Objections (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03- 2-10 08:32 AM   |   Updated: 03- 2-10 08:41 AM

While Jon Stewart seemed optimistic about the progress made by last week’s health care summit, the media’s overall consensus was that nothing had been accomplished. But as he pointed out last night, it wasn’t the only issue bogged down by Republican opposition. Stewart took on Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning, mocking his repeated objections to a bill that would extend unemployment benefits for 30 days.

Making Bunning out to be a villain who’ll obstruct anything from legislation to birthday pizza, Stewart noted that in the Senate it often takes 60 votes to get anything done, but “sometimes in the Senate it only takes one person to cock the whole thing up.” How draining were Bunning’s nine objections? Toward the end, Al Franken began to look like a broken down old man.

Stewart acknowledged that despite the Democrats’ hopes that he’d get sleepy, Bunning was willing to stay up as long as necessary — even if it meant missing the basketball game he’d planned on watching. Stewart summed up his ridiculousness: “You see that’s the difference between Jim Bunning’s pain and the pain of the unemployed. Jim Bunning’s pain can be fixed by a Tivo.”

Stewart To Glenn Beck: “You’re A Communist!” (VIDEO)

Huff Po- First Posted: 02-23-10 08:13 AM   |   Updated: 02-23-10 08:25 AM

Fresh from the week off, Jon Stewart jumped right in Monday night and took on one of his favorite targets, Glenn Beck, who used his appearance at CPAC as a chance to alert the crowd of the dangers of Progressivism.

At the conference, Beck compared Progressivism to Communism, and cited previous progressives such as Woodrow Wilson and FDR, who pushed for the income tax and universal health care, respectively. Despite the former being used by elected officials to create things for the common good, Beck stressed that these were the first steps on the road to ruin.

Upon hearing Glenn Beck announce that he learned this by reading books at the library, Stewart had some choice words for the Fox News host:

“Glenn, the library isn’t free! It’s paid for with tax money. Free public libraries are the result of the Progressive movement to communally share books. The first public library was the Boston public library in 1854. It’s statement of purpose: every citizen has the right to access community owned resources. Community owned? That sounds just like communist. You’re a communist!”

Here’s a major reason why the Republicans are still a viable party: they don’t mind getting loud. They’re willing to flagrantly lie out loud, while also making a huge production out of insignificant and contradictory nonsense that heretofore was never even considered to be a political trespass — shamelessly and unapologetically amplifying it all to a level of noise that forces the press and voters alike to pay attention.

The Democrats could learn a thing or two about this. More presently.

For all of their faults, the Republicans are absolutely using the whole political animal, so to speak. Like an ancient tribe of hunter-gatherers, they’re somehow able to butcher every carcass and turn all of the lies, gaffes and misstatements into something useful. Something that will command attention. Put another way, the Republican strategy seems to be: there’s no such thing as bad press, so get loud.

Over the weekend, Sarah Palin appeared in Nashville at the Tea Party convention and while criticizing the president for using a teleprompter — a device that all politicians, presidents and TV personalities have used since the technology was first invented — she had the words “tax cuts” scrawled on her hand or else there was a chance she might forget.

A Republican who might forget to say “tax cuts” is like a preacher who might forget to say “Jesus Christ.” But there she was. The leader of the Republican Party — so ill-prepared, so incapable of even the most basic political skills that she had to write a secret crib sheet on her hand to help her remember to say “tax cuts.” Say nothing of the fact that Miss Drill-Baby-Drill had to write “energy” on her hand also.

In her defense, I understand Lincoln had to write “slavery” and “Civil War” on his hand so he wouldn’t forget. So there’s that.

And yet the Republicans don’t mind getting loud about it. She’s just like regular folks, they say. She’s just like you, they say. This makes her qualified to be president, they say. (The Republicans are even loud about repeating colossal mistakes. Even after George W. Bush nearly destroyed the Republican brand, they’re doubling down on the stupid by elevating Sarah Palin. Just remarkable.)

UPDATE: Jon Stewart appeared on The O’Reily Factor Wednesday night to weigh in on Obama’s performance and the Fox News narrative. Fox has decided to air the interview over two days. Watch Wednesday’s exchange below.

Jon Stewart On ‘O’Reilly’ (2/3/10)

Daily Show host Jon Stewart will enter the “No Spin Zone” tomorrow night when he sits down for an interview with Fox News host Bill O’Reilly. The sit down will air over two nights, tomorrow and Thursday.

This isn’t the first time the two hosts have squared off. Most recently when O’Reilly went on the Daily Show right after the election of President Obama. Click HERE to watch it.

Stewart most recently went after Fox News for its handling of President Obama’s Q&A session with congressional Republicans. While other networks aired the stunning exchange in its entirety, Fox News did not. Stewart believes that’s because Obama’s answers did not square with Fox’s conservative narrative.
