Crash Pilot Appears To Have Written Anti-IRS, Anti-Corporate Screed

TPM Muckraker

Zachary Roth | February 18, 2010, 2:45PM

Joe Stack, the Texas man who this morning, say law enforcement officials, flew a plane into an Austin building that houses a local IRS office, appears to be the author of a lengthy online screed, lashing out at the IRS, the federal government, and big corporations, and referring to his coming death.

The rant reflects many of the same populist, anti-government, anti-tax, and anti-corporate themes that have surfaced around the country over the last year. It is entitled, and concludes: “Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let’s try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well.”

Stack’s Austin home was on fire this morning, at roughly the same time that he’s said to have crashed his plane, according to the Austin-American Statesman.

Stack died in the crash, officials have confirmed. The paper adds that an IRS revenue collection agent who worked on the building’s second floor is missing, according to another revenue agent who worked in the building. The building, known as the Echelon 1 Building, houses about 190 IRS employees, according to a statement from the agency.

The FAA has said the crash appears to be a “criminal act” and that the FBI would take the lead in investigating the incident. But federal officials have said they don’t consider the crash to be a terrorist attack, according to the New York Times.

In the message, posted at the site EmbeddedArt.com, Stack, a software engineer, writes that the idea of “No Taxation Without Representation” is espoused as a principle, but that in reality, “anyone who really stands up for that principal is promptly labeled a ‘crackpot’, traitor and worse.”

He also appears to denounce the Wall Street firms that helped caused the financial crisis — and even the lack of progress on health-care reform, criticizing Washington politicians for failing to fix “the joke we call the American medical system,” and for doing the bidding of the drug and insurance companies:

Why is it that a handful of thugs and plunderers can commit unthinkable atrocities (and in the case of the GM executives, for scores of years) and when it’s time for their gravy train to crash under the weight of their gluttony and overwhelming stupidity, the force of the full federal government has no difficulty coming to their aid within days if not hours? Yet at the same time, the joke we call the American medical system, including the drug and insurance companies, are murdering tens of thousands of people a year and stealing from the corpses and victims they cripple, and this country’s leaders don’t see this as important as bailing out a few of their vile, rich cronies. Yet, the political “representatives” (thieves, liars, and self-serving scumbags is far more accurate) have endless time to sit around for year after year and debate the state of the “terrible health care problem”. It’s clear they see no crisis as long as the dead people don’t get in the way of their corporate profits rolling in.

Referring to the bailouts of airlines after 9/11, Stack writes: “the Government came to the aid of the airlines with billions of our tax dollars … as usual they left me to rot and die while they bailed out their rich, incompetent cronies WITH MY MONEY!”

He adds: “There has never been a politician cast a vote on any matter with the likes of me or my interests in mind. Nor, for that matter, are they the least bit interested in me or anything I have to say.”

He concludes with a shot at the capitalist system:

The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed.

Chillingly, Stack signs his message: “Joe Stack (1956-2010).”

Fmr. NYC Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik

Kerik Sentenced To Four Years For Tax Fraud, Lying To White House

TPM Muckraker

Justin Elliott | February 18, 2010, 12:17PM

Former New York Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik was sentenced today to four years in prison for lying during his vetting to be secretary of homeland security and tax fraud charges arising in part from renovations on his apartment paid for by a company looking for a city license.

The sentence exceeded the 27 to 33 months sought by prosecutors.

The AP reports:

“The fact that Mr. Kerik would use that event (9/11) for personal gain and aggrandizement is a dark place in the soul for me,” said federal Judge Stephen Robinson. An apologetic Kerik said before the sentence was pronounced: “Allow me to return to my wife and two little girls as soon as possible.”

As we noted earlier today, Rudy Giuliani, once a vocal champion of Kerik, has not commented, and was not among those who asked the judge to be lenient with Kerik.

TPMmuckraker’s full coverage of Kerik over the years is here.

Glenn Beck BARKING Rant: Barks Like Mad Dog Over Obama Stimulus (VIDEO)

Glenn Beck has played with dolls and cried his eyes out on the air, but last night he broke new ground in the field of bizarre Beck antics when he laid into President Obama’s stimulus efforts by barking like a mad dog.

Obama yesterday defended his administration’s handling of the stimulus funds, commending Vice President Joe Biden for successfully keeping waste to a minimum in such a large program. “As Joe puts it, so far, at least, the dog hasn’t barked,” Obama said.

An incredulous Beck began furiously barking before embarking on one of his signature rants: “The dog hasn’t barked? It’s like a pack of Cujos ripping apart the flesh of the American people!”

Wild wild northwest: Tea partier wants to hang Democratic senator

Raw Story– By David Edwards and Diana Sweet
Thursday, February 18th, 2010 — 9:45 am

Democrats have been falsely called Fascists, Socialists and Nazis since Barack Obama was elected president, why not call them cattle rustlers, too.

Welcome to the wild, wild Pacific Northwest.

At a Tea Party event in Asotin, Idaho Saturday, one unnamed speaker announced that she would like to hang Senator Patty Murray.

“How many of you have watched the movie Lonesome Dove?,” the unidentified woman asked. “What happened to Jake when he ran with the wrong crowd? What happened to Jake when he ran with the wrong crowd. He got hung. And that’s what I want to do with Patty Murray.”

In the miniseries based on Larry McMurtry’s novel, Jake Spoon’s former friends couldn’t bear to hang him after they rounded him up in a posse for going on a cattle rustling, murdering spree, so he spurred his own horse to help them enact frontier justice. It’s doubtful any congress members would act similarly.

The Tea Party event, which was attended by around 500 people, was organized by Lewis and Clark Tea Party Patriots, a group that argues “that it is time to ‘sound the alarm’ against a Government that is not representing the citizens of the States.”

“Our Goal will be to continue in a consistent form to reform what now is being called the Elected Officials of these States and Government of these States and the Government of the United States of America,” the group’s website states. “We believe in the citizens of this great country can and will make America a better place.”

KOMO news adds,

In the days after the speech, Democrats have rushed to Murray’s defense, claiming the speakers’ words amount to hate speech.

“She (Murray) understands that people are, you know, anxious. The unemployment is high, the economy is not going well,” Dwight Pelz of the state Democratic party. “There’s a lot of anxiety out there, but that doesn’t justify hatred, and doesn’t justify threats of violence.”

The senator’s office had no comments on the issue.

KLEW has more details on the party.

The Israeli Ambassador has revealed no further information after being summoned to the Foreign Office to answer charges that a hit squad stole the identities of six Britons as cover for an assassination plot in Dubai.

Speaking after a meeting with Sir Peter Rickett’s, Ron Prosor said: ‘I was unable to add additional information to Sir Peter Ricketts’s request.’

He told reporters it was ‘not the usual way’ to talk about what happens in meetings such as the one he had with Sir Peter.

When Argentine troops invaded the Falklands in the summer of 1982, I was a twenty-five year old teacher of English as a Foreign Language, living and working in northern Italy. Like many Britons, many of whom had never heard of the Falklands, let alone be able to tell you where they were, I was outraged that these islands should be taken over by the Argentine Junta, in a bid to shore up its faltering popularity at home. Many Italian friends and aquaintances were against the war, some thought it evitabile (avoidable), one or two were with us.

My attitude to the war changed after the sinking of the General Belgrano, a former United States cruiser, the USS Phoenix (CL-46), which had survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and was known as the luckiest ship in the US Navy. Hit by torpedoes from a British submarine, she proved not so lucky after her change of name and ownership. 323 Argentines were killed, many of them boys, and controversy still rages today as to whether she was a legitimate target.
