BRITAIN should stop women wearing the body-concealing burkha, both Muslims and non-Muslims said yesterday.
They were backing French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s call for Muslim women to be freed from being “prisoners behind a screen”.
Moderate Muslims in Britain supported the move here, pointing out that the burkha had no justification in Islamic teachings.
Ghaffar Hussain, of the anti-extremist think-tank Quilliam, said that while not in favour of an outright ban, there was nothing on religious grounds that justified women having to wear burkhas.
The think tank said that people should be allowed to wear what they wanted.
But the arguments for wearing burkhas were bogus.
Mr Hussain said: “There is nothing in the Koran that says you have to wear a burkha. It’s a cultural thing. To wear a burkha in modern Britain is not essential from any Islamic point of view.
And a rejoinder from burqa fetishists, ENGAGE…
The niqab and burqa debate sparked off by Nicolas Sarkozy’s comments on Monday continues apace in today’s papers.
The Daily Express informs us that both Muslims and non – Muslims want Britain to ban the burqa. Their sources of authoritative commentary? Among others, the rabid neo-con Douglas Murray and Ghaffar Hussain of the Quilliam Foundation. What a surprise.
Just to clarify, Ghaffar did not in any way support a ban. All he said is that there were no religious reasons for wearing it, but women should be free to choose to wear the burka if that’s what they want to do. See here.
I think it is ridiculous to order women what to wear and what not to wear. A burkha and a hijab represents modesty for a muslim woman. Why cant people just accept that and move on? We do not WANT to show our legs etc to the whole world, hence where the burkha comes in. its loose, comfortable, its like a long dress, so what is the harm in that? The burkha is not mentioned in the Qu’raan, but it does state that women should dress modestly. This meaning covering up and not showing flesh apart from hands, face and feet (if u wish) and this is only when around men. When a woman is with other women, she doesnt need to dress like this. So what is the harm in that? They talk about free will, yet talking about BANNING the burkha? makes no sense.
As for the headscarf, what harm is that doing?? it is just covering the hair, so what is the big deal? making a big issue out of nothing. complete nonsense. Why cant muslims just follow their faith in peace and without such silly interruptions.
Nuns wear head veils, Hindus wear it, Sikhs wear the turbans, and there are alot more religions who dress modestly, so why is everyone targeting just muslims?? Not everyone is an extremist. We dont agree with the extremists either. At the end of the day, Islam is about peace, and these people have completely changed the meaning to everything and so everybody else is getting it wrong now.
To see Muslim people actually aggreeing with the burkha banning is just shocking. It just shows how much knowledge that they lack in that subject. And they call themselves muslims?? what they mean is so called “muslims”. Shame on you.
