Obama To McCain: You Were Wrong (Debate 9/26/08)

By- Suzie-Q @ 9:20 PM MST

Obama: So John, you like to pretend like the war started in 2007. You talk about the “surge,” the war started in 2003. At the time, when the war started, you said it was going to be quick and easy. You said you knew where the weapons of mass destruction were — and you were wrong. You said we were going to be greeted as liberators — you were wrong. You said that there was no history of violence between Shi’a and Sunni, and you were wrong. …if the question is, who is best equipped as the next president to make good decisions about how we use our military, how we make sure we are prepared and ready for the next conflict, then I think we can take a look at our judgment.

Jack Cafferty: If Sarah Palin Being One Heartbeat Away “Doesn’t Scare The Hell Out Of You, It Should”

Huffington Post |   September 26, 2008 05:24 PM

Jack Cafferty unloaded on Sarah Palin’s “disastrous” interview with Katie Couric Friday afternoon on CNN, telling Wolf Blitzer, “There’s a reason the McCain campaign keeps Governor Palin away from the press.”

After showing a clip of Palin stumbling over Couric’s question about the bailout and offering an answer connecting the bailout to healthcare, Cafferty asked, “Did you get that?”

He warned the viewers: “If John McCain wins this woman will be one 72-year-old’s heartbeat away from being President of the United States. And if that doesn’t scare the hell out of you, it should.”

Boehner Letter To Pelosi

House Minority Leader John Boehner sent Speaker Nancy Pelosi a letter this morning asking for Democrats’ consideration of a “package of ideas” offered by House Republicans. One major difference between their plan and the one offered by the administration is that the government would no longer be buying the securities and assets, banks and investors would.

House Republicans are prepared to stay in Washington to forge an agreement on a proposal that reflects the core free-market, pro-taxpayer principles of our Party. With that in mind, earlier this week, with your knowledge, I directed our Chief Deputy Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) to lead a working group of House Republicans to develop a package of ideas to move this process forward.[snip]

If such consideration is not given, a large majority of Republicans cannot — and will not — support Sec. Paulson’s plan. In the interest of the men and women we represent in Congress, I hope it does not come to that conclusion. I look forward to your timely response and to continuing our work together on an economic rescue package worthy of all of our support.

Kathleen Parker: After Interviews, Palin Should Bow Out

The Huffington Post |  Rachel Weiner   |   September 26, 2008 09:11 AM

Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, admitting that until recently she was a vocal supporter of Sarah Palin, now says the vice presidential nominee should bow out:

Some of the passionately feminist critics of Palin who attacked her personally deserved some of the backlash they received. But circumstances have changed since Palin was introduced as just a hockey mom with lipstick — what a difference a financial crisis makes — and a more complicated picture has emerged.
As we’ve seen and heard more from John McCain’s running mate, it is increasingly clear that Palin is a problem. Quick study or not, she doesn’t know enough about economics and foreign policy to make Americans comfortable with a President Palin should conditions warrant her promotion.

Parker says her turnaround came from watching Palin in interview. Like other critics, she wasn’t impressed:

Palin’s recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity, and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate. Who Is Clearly Out Of Her League.
No one hates saying that more than I do. Like so many women, I’ve been pulling for Palin, wishing her the best, hoping she will perform brilliantly. I’ve also noticed that I watch her interviews with the held breath of an anxious parent, my finger poised over the mute button in case it gets too painful. Unfortunately, it often does. My cringe reflex is exhausted.

Palin filibusters. She repeats words, filling space with deadwood. Cut the verbiage and there’s not much content there.

It’s so bad, Parker says, that Palin should quit the race:

Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first.

7:31 PM: McCain Camp Won’t Let Palin Spin:

After Barack Obama and John McCain stop talking on the debate stage Friday night, their surrogates will start spinning. But one high-profile supporter of Mr. McCain will be missing: his running mate Sarah Palin.
Spinning on behalf of the Democrats on Friday night will be Joe Biden, Mr. Obama’s running mate. He is expected to appear live on NBC, CBS, and CNN immediately following the debate, representatives of those networks said on Friday.

4:22 PM: Ku Klux Klan members are planning on appearing at tonight’s debate, according to the University of Mississippi newspaper.

1:09 PM: National Review‘s Rich Lowry finds one consequence of McCain’s gambit — “everyone at Ole Miss now hates him. It will make for a very hostile audience tonight among those students and faculty attending.”

12:00 PM: McCain heads to Mississippi with Rudy Giuliani and others in tow. A pool report says the atmosphere is “utter confusion.”

Despite Chaos On Bailout; McCain Now Agrees To Debate

By- Suzie-Q @ 10:15 AM MST

Despite logjam, McCain agrees to debate

Published: Friday September 26, 2008

Despite the fact that there is still a logjam over the proposed $700 billion bailout plan, Republican presidential candidate John McCain decided Friday that he will debate Senator Barack Obama anyway.

“No such an agreement has been reached, but Republicans said the standoff was hurting McCain’s campaign, and he would look terrible if he ruined the nationally televised, eagerly anticipated debate while Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) was ready to go onstage,” Politico reports.

McCain’s statement announced, “The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the senator will travel to the debate this afternoon. Following the debate, he will return to Washington to ensure that all voices and interests are represented in the final agreement, especially those of taxpayers and homeowners.”

Fox News reported that Obama left for the debate site nearly an hour before the McCain statement was released.
