Calling big oil…..hello
From: Andrew Halcro Blog
On Monday we reported that Governor Palin is attempting to reach out to the major oil producers who are necessary in order to build Alaska’s natural gas pipeline.
This morning in the Fairbanks Daily News Miner, Robert Dillon reports that the calls are expected to cover a range of possible topics, including the state’s tax and royalty rates, state oversight of gas-field infrastructure, and the ongoing wrestling match over the fate of Point Thomson.
The participation of Exxon Mobil, BP and ConocoPhillips – which combined hold rights to roughly 90 percent of the proven gas reserves on the North Slope – is considered by everyone involved essential to the success of a pipeline project.
Palin is expected to ask the companies in the coming days what they need to get onboard with the state-backed TransCanada project.
This is where the issue becomes tricky for Palin.
For the last twenty months as governor, Palin has refused to hold any meaningful conversations with the oil & gas industry in Alaska. Instead she has adopted a “my way or the highway” approach.
In a widely reported letter to ConocoPhillips CEO Jim Mulva back in January, Palin struck the tone of a moody tenth grader while attempting to lecture the CEO of one of the largest oil & gas companies in the world about the economics of oil & gas.
In the letter Palin wrote, “The economic terms under which oil and gas is produced “upstream” and the construction of a pipeline should be independent”.
That’s like saying the cost of your house should be considered independently from your ability to pay the mortgage.
My favorite portion of the letter was when Palin suggests the CEO simply look at the response to her state sponsored gas line propoal to show just how out of bounds ConocoPhillips was to expect the state to negotiate tax and royalty terms.
“The state had several good-faith proposals to build a pipeline under AGIA without any requirements to first modify upstream tax and royalty obligations”, Palin wrote.
The fact is not one of those “good-faith proposals” had any gas reserves so they didn’t have any upstream tax or royalty obligations to modify. In addition, the company chosen to carry out Palin’s state sponsored proposal, TransCanada, is on record stating that without the agreement and support of Exxon, BP and ConocoPhillips the pipeline will not be built.
Her my way or the highway approach may have worked when she raised oil taxes to one of the highest marginal rates in the world last fall, but it doesn’t work when trying to attract commitments to build the largest and most expensive oil & gas project in the world.
Now that Palin is on the main stage, and already told Americans in her speech last week that a pipeline is on the way, she is up against the wall. The fact is that with the governor’s plan, this state is no closer to a gas pipeline than it was years ago under former Governor Frank Murkowski.
My sources tell me these companies are in no hurry to talk to the governor now that she has suddenly realized that all the tough talk on the stump about getting tough with big oil may play well in Pennsylvania, but it doesn’t get the pipeline built.
A comment from the article:
lol…looks like you’re all in the lower 20% of Alaska’s population since Palin ENJOYS an 80% positive rating from Alaskans. And, since “polls” and “ratings” are so important to liberals, that should tell you something. The liberal congress is in the tank… and if you look back at history, the dems and libs have been on the wrong side of every issue just about.
It’s so amazing that you guys have to go “searching” for something wrong with Palin. Out of one side of a lib’s mouth, they hate the big oil companies…and now they try to stick up for the oil companies, and poor, mean ol’ Palin is just sooooo mean to them. Bad Palin! Bad!
If I were you guys, I would just continue to let the people from all the other countries who want Obama in….(gee, we really care what THEY want!) and let the really intelligent Hollywood types, like Pamela Anderson….ew….keep speaking for you. It just makes more people want to vote for McCain. If I was a lib newspaper guy like “Dillon” of the Fairbanks Daily News, I’d write an article telling all those people to shut the H— up… they’re doing more harm than good. But….I don’t really want him to do that…cuz I want the Matt Damon’s of the world, and all the Saudi’s…and all the muslim countries to keep saying, “we want Obama in…then, and only then, we’ll LIKE America!” lol
It’s so funny that people like you on this blog will make such a big deal out of the above…but you say nothing at all about all the people Obama’s hung out with all these years….or his pastor….damning America….or his wife saying American’s are mean people….or that she’s just now proud of her country for the first time…or the fact that he’s been the most liberal voter in the Senate…or that he only voted “present” at over 150 votes. And how come when Obama went to Hawaii with his family…and he went to spend all of 2 hours with his white Grandmother after not seeing her for more than ten years, how come his wife, Michelle, wouldn’t go with him, or at least take the kids to see her, too? It’s because they’re both racist. He’s said some pretty racist things about her in his book… and it’s also on audio with him reading it. Such nice people. They hate their country…he’ll only wear a flag pin when they MAKE him wear a flag pin.
And it took him nine months to sit down with Bill O’Reilly… because he was afraid of him….and they’re making a big deal about Palin not going on the news? lol give me a break!
If Obama is so FEARLESS….why won’t he take McCain up on his offer to go out on the road TO ALL THE PEOPLE….RIGHT TO THE PEOPLE….and have OPEN town hall meetings? What’s Obama afraid of? Isn’t it the PEOPLE he’s trying to reach? Their votes? Then why not go out and talk to them, and let THEM openly question BOTH CANDIDATES? I’ll tell you why, it’s because he’s afraid. He doesn’t know what he believes, or stands for, and so he has to make sure he keeps his answers straight.
lol…you’re all just sore losers….McCain hit y’all with a left jab when he chose Palin. Obama thought he had it in the bag… lol…he should have chosen Hillary….oops! He did it again! Made the wrong choice….sorry!
Read my lipstick…..go McCain/Palin!!! Real change we can believe in….Country first….
Oh…and I’m an “independent” woman, who was against McCain due to his immigration….and I was upset because he kept BUCKING all the conservative issues….which shows that he’s not in the bag for anyone. I like that he hasn’t taken even one piece of pork money….he has integrity. So, you could say I’m a change over….someone who looks at the ISSUES….and realizes that he’s NOTHING like Bush. In fact, I remember one time when he and Bush didn’t get along…guess you guys don’t get the news… and maybe don’t remember that. All the news media at that time kept making a big deal out of McCain and Bush not being “friendly” because McCain wouldn’t vote the way Bush and the Republicans wanted him to. He IS the original MAVERICK, and that’s what I like about him.
And I like Palin because she’s a strong woman…and has common sense. She understands that Obama would let a baby die outside the womb in the case of a “botched Abortion”… which they also have him talking about on tape. And the same people who are for late term abortion would convict a man of killing his pregnant wife….and ALSO the baby within… even though it’s not supposed to be a human being, but a fetus. So, you can kill it via abortion….and it’s okay….even late term… but you can’t kill it if you’re a husband, and don’t want it. Only the wife or the woman carrying it can kill it….not you, husband, boyfriend! lol Lots of common sense going here.

I didn’t write the article… however, it was written by an Alaskan resident, Andrew Halcro and I have forwarded your comments to him.
