Sarah Palin – Worse for the Environment Than Even Bush

Sarah Palin showing off her kill

Sarah Palin spent $400,000 of state money to “educate” Alaskans about aerial hunting of wolves and bears.  State tax money was used to directly influence the outcome of proposition 2 which would have limited aerial shooting of predators.  Since Alaskans had previously voted twice to ban aerial shooting of predators, Palin used state tax money to buy support for aerial shooting. Buying votes with tax money worked – proposition two was voted down on 8/26/08.

Read more about Governor Palin’s “predator control” policies and the use of state money to slaughter bears and wolves. This year the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game will exterminate 1,400 bears out of a population of 2,000 in an area west of Anchorage. The Alaskan Board of Game even approved the hunting of black bear mothers and cubs with the goal of killing 60 percent of the black bear population. Although biologists have known since the 60’s that predators actually keep prey populations healthy, Alaskan wolves and bears are being exterminated (using cruel practices such as baiting, trapping, and aerial shooting) to boost dwindling moose populations.  Do we really want a vice president who doesn’t believe in science?

Sarah Palin sues the federal government over listing polar bears as a threatened species. Why?  Because it could restrict the oil industry that fills her pockets.  This is the same reason she wants to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil drilling. Read Governor Palin’s ignorant op-ed piece here. Palin believes that global warming is a myth.

Sarah Palin’s voting record supports development of the Pebble Mine – the largest open pit mine in North America.  Pebble mine jeapordizes the entire Bristol bay ecosystem which contains the largest sockeye salmon run in the world.  The mine would pollute an unprecedented number or rivers, lakes, and bays.  Although Palin claims that the mine would create jobs for Alaskans, it will effectively destroy the commercial and sport fishing industry in Bristol Bay – the main source of income for Alaskans in Bristol bay.  Pebble Mine’s potential for pollution makes the Exxon Valdez oil spill look like a tiny grease stain.  Click here to watch the NY Times video story about the environmental destruction this mine would create.

IAVA Director: Faux Walter Reed Background ‘Was As Close As McCain Got To Veterans Issues’ At RNC

Think Progress- By Ali at 3:38 pm

On Thursday night, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) formally accepted his party’s nomination for president at the Republican National Convention. During his speech, a mysterious image of a building appeared on the screen behind him, which TalkingPointsMemo identified as Walter Reed Middle School, in North Hollywood, CA. (The school did not grant permission to use its image.) Some suspect McCain had intended to show a photo of Walter Reed Medical Center; the McCain campaign has offered conflicting explanations for the bizarre use of the photo.

Appearing on MSNBC’s Countdown last night, Paul Riekhoff, director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, slammed McCain for completely ignoring Iraq and Afghanistan veterans during his speech, saying the mistaken background was “about as close as Sen. McCain got to veterans issues”:

RIECKHOFF: I think honestly that backdrop, whether it was Walter Reed medical center or Walter Reed middle school — that’s about as close as Sen. McCain got to veterans issues last night. He didn’t mention the word veteran once during his entire speech, didn’t talk about post-traumatic stress disorder, didn’t talk about veterans funding. I think he really forgot where he came from last night.

Watch the entire interview:

Rieckhoff also mentioned McCain’s opposition to the 21st Century GI Bill. “We told America that if Sen. McCain was on the wrong side of the G.I. Bill, it would hang around his neck for the election. That’s exactly what’s happening now,” Rieckhoff said.

McCain’s opposition to the GI Bill is just one aspect of his abysmal record on veterans issues. It’s no wonder, as Rieckhoff said, that we saw “a deliberate attempt by the RNC not to put Iraq and Afghanistan vets out in front.”

Obama Rips McCain On ‘Change’

Obama Targets McCain and Palin on ‘Change’

ABC News- Political Radar-

September 06, 2008 1:59 PM

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Senator Obama dusted off an argument from his primary days as he debuted an almost completely new stump speech against John McCain and Sarah Palin in Terra Haute, Indiana today.

“Everywhere I go we’ve been talking about change, that’s been the theme of the campaign. And we must be on to something, because I notice now everyone’s talking about change now,” Obama said in reciting a line that he once used against Senator Clinton during the primaries.

This time the target was John McCain.

“John McCain has said that change is coming!” Obama laughed, “Now think about this coming from the party that’s been in charge for 8 years, they’ve been running the show! Been up in the White House, John McCain brags, ‘90% of the time I have voted with George Bush. He and I we we’re right there’ and suddenly he’s the change agent!”

VIDEO HERE

Or watch it here:

A feisty and perplexed Obama continued on his tirade.

“He says I’m going to tell those lobbyists that their days in Washington are over. Who’s he gonna tell? Is he gonna tell his campaign chairman who’s one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell all the folks who are running his campaign who are the biggest corporate lobbyist in Washington? Who is it that he’s going to tell that change is coming?”

Big Gains In Voter Registration For Democrats

Democrats Post Big Gains In Voter Registration

JULIE PACE and STEPHEN OHLEMACHER | September 6, 2008 12:17 PM EST | AP

CLAIRTON, Pa. — Five days a week, Linda Graham trolls tattered neighborhoods of this once thriving steel city outside Pittsburgh for unregistered voters she can sign up as Democrats _ one of thousands of unknown volunteers whose work outside the limelight has already altered the basic arithmetic of the November election.

The epic nomination battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton helped put millions more Democrats on the voter rolls while Republican registration declined. Now Graham, 45, has taken three months of unpaid leave from her job at Pittsburgh’s Central Blood Bank in the hope of adding to those gains before the presidential vote.

She’s encouraged by the response here. “They’re all feeling the crunch” of lost jobs and a sagging economy, Graham said. “But people are feeling empowered. They’re feeling like, you know what, I hold a little bit of power in this.”

To counter this effort, the Republicans are counting on a formidable, high-tech get-out-the-vote operation that has helped them win the past two presidential elections.

Since the last federal election in 2006, volunteers like Graham combined with the enthusiasm generated by the Obama-Clinton struggle to add more than 2 million Democrats to voter rolls in the 28 states that register voters according to party affiliation. The Republicans have lost nearly 344,000 thousand voters in the same states.

The Democrats hope their voter registration efforts can boost Obama to victory in competitive states like Pennsylvania, Nevada and Florida and perhaps even give him a shot at winning traditional Republican states like Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

Both Obama and his Republican rival, John McCain, are fighting for independent swing voters, and many of the new Democrats had been unaffiliated voters.

The number of unaffiliated voters dropped by nearly 900,000 since 2006. Many joined the Democratic Party to take part in the primaries and caucuses, and now they will now be targeted by an aggressive get-out-the-vote campaign.

“We feel that our supporters are more enthusiastic than we’ve seen in previous cycles,” said Jon Carson, Obama’s national field director.

Ways To Attack McCain

Ways to attack McCain

Sat Sep 06, 2008 at 10:14:22 AM PDT

The whole country just saw his weak sauce speech.  He sucked.  Now it’s time to kick him in the balls hard and repeatedly.  Here are some lines of attack that will help bruise the old codger good.

NUMBER ONE LINE OF ATTACK:

His veteran’s votes.  J. Mac’s POW story is all he’s got.  So it’s time to hammer that the way Rove hammered Kerry’s Vietnam service and here’s the theme: John McCain doesn’t care about the troops.  Ad after Ad, from Vote Vets first and then from the Obama campaign itself, highlighting his votes against veterans’ benefits and against Webb’s G.I. Bill.  If I’m a low information voter, the only thing I should hear about McCain is that he doesn’t give a shit about the troops when they come home, and he doesn’t care about military families.

NUMBER TWO LINE OF ATTACK:

The Repugs have two lines of attack on Obama: Elitist and Celebrity.  So we should have two on McCain.  Right now, we’re hitting him as “Just like Bush” but that’s not a negative impression of his character.  Building on what we’ve already done, I would say the frames to attack him with is “Confused” and “Panderer.”

We can highlight “Confused” with all of the positions he’s taken that contradict each other, along with every gaffe he’s ever made.  Make a composite ad of him forgetting stuff and misspeaking, and basically imply that he has Altzheimer’s.  Scare the public about a senile old man in the white house and be brutal about it.

“Panderer” is a little trickier, but basically it’s the Kerry Windsurfer attack, but with an added shot at MCain’s principled image.  He’s not a Maverick, he’s a self serving used car salesman who doesn’t give a shit about anything except getting elected.  Show how every “Maverick” decision has actually been made to get him stuff.  “John McCain will say anything and do anything… to help John McCain.”  Sprinkle the Keating Five stuff in these ads.

LINE OF ATTACK NUMBER THREE:

Taxes!  They keep lying About Obama raising taxes.  I think we need a very simple positive ad on Obama with no other message other than his tax cutting plans.  If I’m a low info voter all I want me to hear about till November is how Obama will cut my taxes by 1000 dollars and McCain won’t.

THEN, when this is firmly taking hold (It isn’t now, or the Elephants wouldn’t be able to lie about Obama’s tax record so frequently) hit McCain over and over about how he doesn’t want to cut taxes on the middle class, because he doesn’t care about you.  Why are tax cuts good enough for the rich but not for you?  Cause McCain is an OLD RICH ASSHOLE.  The kind of rich guy we see in Trading Places and Marx Brothers movies. He’s JUDGE SMAILS from Caddyshack.  And he doesn’t give a shit about rabble like you.

John McCain doesn’t care if you have any money.  If you want wealth, do what he did.  Marry it.

Anyway, what do you think of these attack lines?  Any way to streamline them?  At this point we don’t need a bunch of punches, we need a couple we can keep throwing till November.

McCain Trying to Derail Troopergate – NEWSWEEK

Posted by Basheert – via NEWSWEEK

TEAM MCCAIN AND THE TROOPER

Nominee’s ally moves to curb probe of Palin

Key Alaska allies of John McCain are trying to derail a politically charged investigation into Gov. Sarah Palin’s firing of her public safety commissioner in order to prevent a so-called “October surprise” that would produce embarrassing information about the vice presidential candidate on the eve of the election.

In a move endorsed by the McCain campaign Friday, John Coghill, the GOP chairman of the state House Rules Committee, wrote a letter seeking a meeting of Alaska’s bipartisan Legislative Council in order to remove the Democratic state senator in charge of the so-called “troopergate” investigation.

Coghill charged that the senator, Hollis French, had “politicized” the probe by making a number of public comments in recent days, including telling ABC News that Palin had a “credibility problem” and that the investigation into the firing of public safety commissioner Walter Monegan was “likely to be damaging to the administration” and could be an “October surprise.” Wrote Coghill: “The investigation appears to be lacking in fairness, neutrality and due process.”
