The Chicken Doves

Elected to end the war, Democrats have surrendered to Bush on Iraq and betrayed the peace movement for their own political ends

MATT TAIBBI
Rolling Stone

Quietly, while Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been inspiring Democrats everywhere with their rolling bitchfest, congressional superduo Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have completed one of the most awesome political collapses since Neville Chamberlain. At long last, the Democratic leaders of Congress have publicly surrendered on the Iraq War, just one year after being swept into power with a firm mandate to end it.Solidifying his reputation as one of the biggest pussies in U.S. political history, Reid explained his decision to refocus his party’s energies on topics other than ending the war by saying he just couldn’t fit Iraq into his busy schedule. “We have the presidential election,” Reid said recently. “Our time is really squeezed.”

There was much public shedding of tears among the Democratic leadership, as Reid, Pelosi and other congressional heavyweights expressed deep sadness that their valiant charge up the hill of change had been thwarted by circumstances beyond their control — that, as much as they would love to continue trying to end the catastrophic Iraq deal, they would now have to wait until, oh, 2009 to try again. “We’ll have a new president,” said Pelosi. “And I do think at that time we’ll take a fresh look at it.”

Pelosi seemed especially broken up about having to surrender on Iraq, sounding like an NFL coach in a postgame presser, trying with a straight face to explain why he punted on first-and-goal. “We just didn’t have any plays we liked down there,” said the coach of the 0-15 Dems. “Sometimes you just have to play the field-position game….”

In reality, though, Pelosi and the Democrats were actually engaged in some serious point-shaving. Working behind the scenes, the Democrats have systematically taken over the anti-war movement, packing the nation’s leading group with party consultants more interested in attacking the GOP than ending the war. “Our focus is on the Republicans,” one Democratic apparatchik in charge of the anti-war coalition declared. “How can we juice up attacks on them?”

The story of how the Democrats finally betrayed the voters who handed them both houses of Congress a year ago is a depressing preview of what’s to come if they win the White House. And if we don’t pay attention to this sorry tale now, while there’s still time to change our minds about whom to nominate, we might be stuck with this same bunch of spineless creeps for four more years. With no one but ourselves to blame.

One Last Thing On Shuster

by Bob Cesca @ 11:23 EST

It was a dumb, inappropriate thing to say. And it’s symptomatic of these cable networks turning hard-news reporters into pundits. Non-pundit TV reporters tend to try too hard on pundit shows to be shocking or jokey and end up saying unfortunate things. Shuster is one of NBC’s best reporters, but there he was trying to make with a zinger.

Shuster is nothing if not a precise illustration of a TV news reporter. That’s what he is. I mean, watch his apology, for instance. He delivers it as if he’s reporting on a congressional hearing on speech patterns used by American news correspondents. I was waiting for him to say at the end, “I’mmm David Shuuuuster. Apologizing… on MSNBC. [pregnant pause] Norah.”

So. First. NBC… stop trying to make your reporters into pundits. This is one of many dangerous sides to the cable news attack on objectivity. Reporters should only be asked to REPORT straight news. No opinion. No analysis. There are well-paid bobbles to, well, bobble.

Second, NBC is clearly offering up Shuster as a human sacrifice to the Clintons. Prior to Shuster’s remarks, the tensions between MSNBC and the Clintons had been heating up anyway — accusations from the Clintons that MSNBC is the Obama network and, naturally, Chris Matthews’ baffling anti-Clinton statements. So MSNBC used — pimped, if you will — Shuster’s bloody carcass to assuage the fury of the Clintons.

Josh Marshall wrote that “Matthews is untouchable — and Shuster’s easier to can or suspend.” That’s correct, sir. This was NBC apologizing to the Clintons for all of it. Sacrificing their best reporter for the good of establishing a detente with Team Clinton.

Meanwhile, will Senator Clinton back off her commitment to participate in a debate on FOX News — a network where they don’t suspend anyone for anything at any time no matter how awful the discourse and “jokes”?

Shuster Suspended

by Bob Cesca @ 11:17 EST

Whoa.

NBC NEWS STATEMENT REGARDING CHELSEA CLINTON COMMENT:On Thursday’s “Tucker” on MSNBC, David Shuster, who was serving as guest-host of the program, made a comment about Chelsea Clinton and the Clinton campaign that was irresponsible and inappropriate. Shuster, who apologized this morning on MSNBC and will again this evening, has been suspended from appearing on all NBC News broadcasts, other than to make his apology. He has also extended an apology to the Clinton family. NBC News takes these matters seriously, and offers our sincere regrets to the Clintons for the remarks.

I like David Shuster, but NBC made the right move here. If only FOX News were as responsible when it comes to their fuckwitted anchors saying things that are far, far worse.

George W. Bush’s Resumé

Kelley Kramer

This individual seeks an executive position. He will be available in January 2009, and is willing (and hopeful) to relocate.

RESUME

GEORGE W. BUSH
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,
Washington , DC 20520

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Law Enforcement:

► I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol. I pleaded guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver’s license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been ‘lost’ and is not available.

Military:

► I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam .

College:

► I graduated from Yale University with a low C average. I was a cheerleader.

Past Work Experience:

► I ran for U.S. Congress and lost.

► I began my career in the oil business in Midland, Texas in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn’t find any oil in Texas. The company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my stock.

► I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money.

► With the help of my father and our friends in the oil industry (including Enron CEO Ken Lay), I was elected governor of Texas.

Accomplishments As Governor Of Texas:

► I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union. During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America.

► I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money.

► I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history.

► With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida, and my father’s appointments to the Supreme Court, I became President of the United States, after losing by over 500,000 votes.

Accomplishments As President (with 4 3 5 Notable Firsts):

► I am the first President in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record.

► I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week.

► I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury.

► I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history.

► I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period.

► I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period.

► I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market. In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues.

► I’m proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history. My ‘poorest millionaire, ‘ Condoleezza Rice, has a Chevron oil tanker named after her.

► I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. President.

► I am the all-time U.S. and world record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations.

► My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in U.S. history,

► My political party used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision.

► I have protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation or prosecution. More time and money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate rip-offs in history.

► I presided over the biggest energy crisis in U.S. history and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed.

► I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history.

► I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts

► I appointed more convicted criminals to my administration than any President in U.S. history.

► I garnered the most sympathy ever for the U.S. after the World Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the U.S. the most hated country in the world, the largest failure of diplomacy in world history.

► I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people), shattering the record for protests against any person in the history of mankind.

► I am the first President in U.S. history to order an unprovoked, pre-emptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. Citizens and the world community.

Waterboarding and Inquistion

Sudhan @12:05 CET

David M. Gitlitz | The Providence Journal (Rhode Island), February 8, 2008

WHY has the Bush administration been dancing around the question of whether waterboarding is torture?

Waterboarding was one of the most common tortures employed by the Spanish Inquisition for the first half of its 450-year-long history (circa 1480-1834). This has never been a secret. It is attested to by reams of documents — letters, debates, manuals of instruction and copious records of trials that include verbatim accounts of the torture sessions themselves — in the Historical Archives of Spain and Mexico, in which I have worked for the last 30 years. The information about inquisitorial waterboarding has also been available to the English-reading general public since publication of H.C. Lea’s A History of the Inquisition, the last volume of which appeared a hundred years ago this year.

Here is Lea’s description of the inquisitorial waterboarding:

“The patient was placed on an escalera or potro — a kind of trestle, with sharp-edged rungs across it like a ladder. It slanted so that the head was lower than the feet and, at the lower end was a depression in which the head sank, while an iron band around the forehead or throat kept it immovable. A bostezo, or iron prong, distended the mouth, a toca, or strip of linen, was thrust down the throat to conduct water trickling slowly from a jarra or jar, holding usually a little more than a quart. The patient gasped and felt he was suffocating, and at intervals, the toca was withdrawn and he was adjured to tell the truth. The severity of the infliction was measured by the number of jars consumed, sometimes reaching to six or eight.”

Some Of The Outrageous Lies About 9/11

Sudhan @11:45 CET

By Joseph A. Lopisi | rinf.com, Feb 9, 2008

It  is hard to pick a place to start in terms of talking about the most outrageous lies that the Bush administration and the 9/11 Commission have presented to the people in this country as a reason to attack Afghanistan and Iraq and to launch a “fake war on terror”.

The reason I say this is that I have been reading articles and watching videos about the lies and deceptions surrounding 9/11 for the past three years. If anything, there are so many obvious unanswered questions about 9/11. However, not only has no one answered any of these questions but in fact no one in the mainstream media nor anyone in the United States Congress except for Representative Kucinich and Cynthia McKinney have even asked these questions.

Some of these questions are:

1. How is it that at the crash site of Flight 93, NBC and Fox News on September 11, 2001 reported on the scene with video coverage that there was no sign of a jetliner, engines, bodies or luggage? You can go to my website which is www.911insidejob.net and watch this video report which is on my home page. It has never been shown again on the mainstream media.
