Admin Prevents Former Gitmo Prosecutor from Testifying before Congress

When Col. Morris Davis stepped down as the Pentagon’s chief war crimes prosecutor in October, the reason given seemed to be a somewhat bureaucratic one. He stepped down, it was reported, “in a dispute over whether Air Force Brig. Gen. Thomas Hartmann, legal advisor to the administrator overseeing the trials, has the power to supervise aspects of the prosecution.”

But in an op-ed in today’s Los Angeles Times, Davis is crystal clear. “I felt that the system had become deeply politicized and that I could no longer do my job effectively or responsibly,” he writes.

It’s a taste of what he would have said had he been allowed to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning, during its hearing on the rights of Guantanamo Bay detainees. But Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) announced at the beginning of the hearing that the committee had invited Davis to testify, but that “the Defense Department has ordered him not to appear.”

Calderón decries U.S. harassment of Mexicans

MEXICO CITY — President Felipe Calderón decried Wednesday what he called “the growing harassment” of Mexicans in the United States and said his government will work to counter it by funding a media campaign to show migrant success stories.

Mexican officials have expressed concern over a recent wave of immigration raids and a U.S. political climate perceived as anti-migrant. Calde-rón said U.S. presidential candidates were using migrants as “symbolic hostages” on the immigration issue.

“I am especially worried about the growing harassment and frank persecution of Mexicans in the United States in recent days,” Calderón said at a meeting of the Mexican government’s migrant-assistance agency.

The latest National Intelligence Estimate has been greeted by a mixture of relief and alarm. As I have been saying all along, Iran indeed poses no quantifiable imminent nuclear threat to us or her neighbors. It is with much alarm, however, that we see the administration continue to ratchet up the war rhetoric as if nothing has changed.

Indeed nothing has changed from the administration’s perspective, as they have had this latest intelligence report for some time. Only this week has it been made known to the public. They want it both ways with Iran. On the one hand, they discredit the report entirely, despite it being one of the most comprehensive intelligence reports on the subject, with over 1,000 source notes in the document. On the other hand, when discrediting it fails, they claim that the timing of the abandonment of the weapons program, just as we were invading Iraq, means our pressure must have worked, so we must keep it up with a new round of even tougher sanctions. Russia and China are not buying this, apparently, and again we are finding ourselves on a lonely, tenuous platform on the world stage.
