Airborne Laser in a 747 Jetliner

by Geezer Power …2:47 pm

Airborne Laser

The ABL weapon system consists of a high-energy, chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) mounted on a modified 747-400F (freighter) aircraft to shoot down theater ballistic missiles in their boost phase. A crew of four, including pilot and copilot, would be required to operate the airborne laser, which would patrol in pairs at high altitude, about 40,000 feet, flying in orbits over friendly territory, scanning the horizon for the plumes of rising missiles. Capable of autonomous operation, the ABL would acquire and track missiles in the boost phase of flight, illuminating the missile with a tracking laser beam while computers measure the distance and calculate its course and direction. After acquiring and locking onto the target, a second laser – with weapons-class strength – would fire a three- to five-second burst from a turret located in the 747’s nose, destroying the missiles over the launch area.

The airborne laser would fire a Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser, or COIL, invented at Phillips Lab in 1977. The laser’s fuel consists of the same chemicals found in hair bleach and Drano – hydrogen peroxide and potassium hydroxide – which are then combined with chlorine gas and water. The laser operates at an infrared wavelength of 1.315 microns, which is invisible to the eye. By recycling chemicals, building with plastics and using a unique cooling process, the COIL team was able to make the laser lighter and more efficient while – at the same time – increasing its power by 400 percent in five years. The flight-weighted ABL module would be similar in performance and power levels to the multi-hundred kilowatt class COIL Baseline Demonstration Laser (BDL-2) module demonstrated by TRW in August 1996. As its name implies, though, it would be lighter and more compact than the earlier version due to the integration of advanced aerospace materials into the design of critical hardware components. For the operational ABL system, several modules would be linked together in series to achieve ABL’s required megawatt-class power level.

This is a video clip of the YAL-1A test aircraft. It is the flying prototype of the Airborne Laser (ABL) that is designed to shoot down ballistic missiles and anything else you think it can lock onto. Imagine a giant beam cannon in a 747 jetliner. Yes, just like the 1980’s movie except this one is real.

George W Bu$h recently stated “Iran was dangerous, Iran is dangerous, and Iran will be dangerous if they have the knowledge necessary to make a nucular weapon.”

Well, here it is folks, a film that was made in 1946 by The Federation of American Scientists showing how the technology was developed, but mainly to show the awful consequence of its use. So it looks like the Neoconservative quest to replace our Democratic government with Fascism is almost complete. If Bu$hco has it’s way, a little knowledge will indeed be a dangerous thing, and viewing this video
will be taboo. Reading the book “One World or None” will probably qualify us all as terrorists and owning it will be the evidence…):

Scott Ritter on the NIE Report and War With Iran

The Truthdig columnist (and WMD expert) warns that war with Iran could be inevitable, despite the National Intelligence Estimate report that says Iran dismantled its nuclear program in 2003. Bush, Ritter argues, doesn’t let facts get in the way of what he wants.

Listen now.

Bolton Calls For Congressional Witch-Hunt Into Anti-Bush ‘People In The Intelligence Community’

Think Progress | Wednesday December 5, 2007

Yesterday’s National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) concluded that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003, pouring cold water on neoconservative calls for bombing Iran. Like his ideological kin Norman Podhoretz, former U.N. ambassador and Iran war hawk John Bolton has been attempting to slander the U.S. intelligence community’s collective judgments.

Podhoretz’s ‘Dark Suspicion’: Intel Community Trying To Sabotage Bush With NIE

Think Progress
Wednesday December 5, 2007

Norman Podhoretz, widely reputed to be the “godfather” of neoconservatism, has been one of the most aggressive hawks clamoring for war with Iran. Podhoretz laid out the “The Case For Bombing Iran” in a June cover story in the right-wing Commentary Magazine. He insisted that the Iranians were very close to developing a nuclear weapon:

[Iran’s] effort to build a nuclear arsenal makes it the potentially most dangerous one of all. […]

“[A]ll this negotiating has had the same result as Munich had with Hitler. That is, it has bought the Iranians more time in which they have moved closer and closer to developing nuclear weapons.”

Yesterday’s NIE proved Podhoretz’s claims were false. Rather than modify his views on Iran, Podhoretz — who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 — aired a nasty conspiracy theory yesterday, attacking the authors of the NIE and accusing the intelligence community of deliberately “leaking material calculated to undermine George W. Bush…

Doomsday Plane Spurs 9/11 Conspiracy

By Sharon Weinberger
December 03, 2007 | 9:36:21 AM

The events surrounding 9/11 have prompted one of the fastest growing conspiracy movements in American history (perhaps even set to eclipse the conspiracy theories surrounding the Kennedy assassination in scope and popular interest). Adding fuel to this fire is a new CNN report on the “mystery plane” — a Boeing 747 identified as the E-4B, the National Airborne Operations Center — that flew over the White House on Sept. 11.

Conspiracy theorists say the airplane is proof that the government coordinated the attacks (that raises the question: why then would the government do something so obvious as to fly the “attack coordination” aircraft over the White House). Complicating attempts to refute such theories is that the government apparently won’t confirm this is the E-4B, or to explain why it was flying over the White House on 9/11.

Our Troops Must Leave Iraq

Sudhan @12:15 CET

by Walter Cronkite and David Krieger

The American people no longer support the war in Iraq. The war is being carried on by a stubborn president who, like Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon during the Vietnam War, does not want to lose. But from the beginning this has been an ill-considered and poorly prosecuted war that, like the Vietnam War, has diminished respect for America. We believe Mr. Bush would like to drag the war on long enough to hand it off to another president.

The war in Iraq reminds us of the tragedy of the Vietnam War. Both wars began with false assertions by the president to the American people and the Congress. Like Vietnam, the Iraq War has introduced a new vocabulary: “shock and awe,” “mission accomplished,” “the surge.” Like Vietnam, we have destroyed cities in order to save them. It is not a strategy for success.

The Bush administration has attempted to forestall ending the war by putting in more troops, but more troops will not solve the problem. We have lost the hearts and minds of most of the Iraqi people, and victory no longer seems to be even a remote possibility. It is time to end our occupation of Iraq, and bring our troops home.
