The American Gestapo(Blackwater) Ordered out of Iraq!

by GEF @ 3:22 PM MST

Blackwater Ordered Out of Iraq

CNN is reporting that the Iraqi government wants Blackwater out of Iraq, something that isn’t likely to happen, at least not right away. It may, however, force an interesting show down with the U.S. State Department, which relies heavily on Blackwater for security.

In the meantime, if you missed Blackwater CEO Erik Prince on the Charlie Rose show, the transcript is available here. I give Prince credit for deftly handling the questions — he also sort of, kind of, backed off earlier suggestions that the company could send a brigade-sized team of contractors to Darfur.

A funny detail that came out of the interview: Apparently Prince called George Clooney, of all people, to drum up support for Blackwater’s rent-a-peacekeeping force for Africa.

The Open Secret About the Israel Lobby

Sudhan@20:45 CET

Follow the Leader

By PAUL FINDLEY

There is an open secret in Washington. I learned it well during my 22-year tenure as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. All members swear to serve the interests of the United States, but there is an unwritten and overwhelming exception: The interests of one small foreign country almost always trump U.S. interests. That nation of course is Israel.

Both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue give priority to Israel over America. Those on Capitol Hill are pre-primed to roar approval for Israeli actions whether right or wrong, instead of at least fussing first and then caving. The White House sometimes puts up a modest and ineffective show of resistance before it follows Israel’s lead.

In 2002, President Bush publicly ordered Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon to end a bloody, destructive rampage through the Palestinian West Bank. He wilted just as publicly when he received curt word from Sharon that Israeli troops would not withdraw and would continue their military operations. A few days later President Bush invited Sharon to the White House where he saluted him as a “man of peace.”

Hillary promises more of the same sh*t!

Hillary and Bill

Hillary Clinton today moved to secure her position as the most hawkish Democrat in the 2008 presidential race, saying she would consider the use of force to compel Iran to abandon its nuclear programme.

In an article for Foreign Affairs magazine intended as a blueprint for the foreign policy of a future Clinton White House, the Democratic frontrunner argues that Iran poses a long term strategic challenge to American and its allies, and that it must not be permitted to build or acquire nuclear weapons.

“If Iran does not comply with its own commitments and the will of the international community, all options must remain on the table,” Ms Clinton said.

Egyptian protest

The Bush administration has called for the respect of human rights in Burma, a pretty safe piece of posturing, but it remains silent as Egypt’s dictator, Gen. Hosni Mubarak, unleashes the largest crackdown on public opposition in over a decade. Our moral indignation over the shooting of monks masks the incestuous and growing alliance we have built in the so-called war on terror with some of the world’s most venal dictatorships.

Do You Know the Truth About Lockerbie?

Robert Fisk:

I’m not at all certain that the CIA did not have a scam drugs heist on board and I am not at all sure that the diminutive Libyan agent Megrahi – ultimately convicted on the evidence of the memory of a Maltese tailor – really arranged to plant the bomb on board Pan Am Flight 103 in December 1988.

Hitman claim at Diana inquest

anthony @ 19:20 BST

A driver said yesterday he saw two biker “hitmen” cause the car crash that killed Princess Diana and then check that the victims were dead.

Francois Levistre, 63, claimed a blinding “white flash” was directed at Diana’s Mercedes from the men’s motorbike after it overtook in the Pont d’Alma tunnel, Paris. Seconds later the Mercedes ploughed into a pillar.

Mr Levistre said he then saw the bike’s pillion passenger get off the machine, stroll over to the car, peer at the bodies of Diana, Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul and signal to his colleague that they were apparently dead before speeding off.

Al Gore on Bu$hco & Constitutional Crisis

by Geezer Power …8:39 am

Transcript: Former Vice President Gore’s Speech on Constitutional Issues

(January 17, 2006 — 10:42 AM EST) Talkingpointsmemo.com

I was finally able to give a close read to the Al Gore’s speech from yesterday. And I wanted to add my voice to all of those around the web who’ve been praising what the former vice president said. When I think about the Gore now, in the period since he left elected office, what stands out most about him is the way that he has become a standing rebuke to the shame and moral indolence of today’s custodians of received opinion. You can see it in the sneering and bemused responses his speeches receive from the usual cast of characters.

These really aren’t normal political times we’re living in. And I think Gore is right to say that we’re in the midst of a constitutional crisis, even though too few people are taking notice of it. Our constitution becomes the proverbial falling tree.

The point Gore makes in his speech that I think is most key is the connection between authoritarianism, official secrecy and incompetence.

The president’s critics are always accusing him of law-breaking or unconstitutional acts and then also berating the incompetence of his governance. And it’s often treated as, well … he’s power-hungry and incompetent to boot! Imagine that! The point though is that they are directly connected. Authoritarianism and secrecy breed incompetence; the two feed on each other. It’s a vicious cycle. Governments with authoritarian tendencies point to what is in fact their own incompetence as the rationale for giving them yet more power. Katrina was a good example of this.

The basic structure of our Republic really is in danger from a president who militantly insists that he is above the law.

WAR

Sudhan@12:25 CET

By: Ezzat Goushegir

These are not drops of rain falling from the sky,
This is fire, scraps of metal raining down
These are not dandelions, or butterflies circling in the air
These are children’s torn clothes
Strands of hair floating in the air

There are tall palm trees in the Middle East
The trees have now been decapitated
The men in the south are strong
Now their skulls rest on broken telegraph polls
Like scarecrows in a barren field

The women of the south are brave
Now you must look for their torn limbs
On the mounds of the scorched bricks of dilapidated homes

What is this on the earth, in the air and water?
Raw, bloody scraps of meat?
