MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann began tonight’s Countdown program with a special comment. The unusual move to open his show with the comment, which is almost always reserved for the closing of the program, added gravity to his words.

“It is one of the great, dark, evil lessons of history,” begins Olbermann, “that a country, a government, a military machine can screw up a war seven ways to Sunday; it can get thousands of its people killed; it can risk the safety of its own citizens; it can destroy the fabric of its nation; but as long as it can identify a scapegoat, it can regain, or even gain, power.”

The Bush administration, says Olbermann, has found its scapegoat for Iraq in presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY). Olbermann referred to a letter Pentagon number two Eric Edelman sent to Clinton admonishing her for calling for a withdrawal in Iraq.

“Premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq,” wrote Edelman, “much as we are perceived to have done in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia.”

Washington, D.C. – Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a Senate Ethics complaint against Senator David Vitter (R-LA) asking for an investigation into whether he violated the Senate Rules of Conduct by soliciting for prostitution. On July 9, 2007, it was revealed that Sen. Vitter’s telephone number was included in the so-called “D.C. Madam,” Deborah Jeane Palfrey’s, list of client telephone numbers. Sen. Vitter confirmed that he had sought Ms. Palfrey’s services, saying in a statement, “this was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible.”

Two other women also have alleged that Sen. Vitter engaged the services of prostitutes. According to Jeanette Maier, the “Canal Street Madam,” Senator Vitter visited a New Orleans, Louisiana brothel several times in the mid-1990s and a woman who worked as a prostitute under the name of Wendy Cortez has claimed that several years ago, Senator Vitter was a regular client of hers.

Engaging the services of a prostitute violates both District of Columbia and Louisiana criminal law.

Liberals Vow to Block Continued Iraq Funding

by- Suzie-Q @ 4:21 PM MST

Seventy House members, nearly all liberal Democrats, vowed today that they would not support any more funding for Iraq military operations unless tied to a complete withdrawal of combat troops.

This is a big development. Earlier this year, liberals grudgingly voted for Iraq funding bills because they didn’t want to give Nancy Pelosi a defeat. Now it seems that their patience has run out.

The next Iraq funding bill won’t come up until the fall, so this showdown won’t happen for a few months, but it appears to be shaping up as an epic battle between liberals in Congress and President Bush. This may be the beginning of the end for the Iraq War.

The liberals’ full letter to Bush appears after the jump …

Neocon Wet Dreams Are Fast Becoming Reality

by- Mentarch … 19:00 EDT

With the Iraq and Afghanistan wars causing much chaos while encouraging increased insurgency and terrorism, with a confrontation against Iran looming, and with Pakistan now being likewise targeted by the rattling of American sabers, the rest of the Middle East is in turn gradually destabilizing, hopelessly caught in a sinking vortex that will lead ultimately to more war and chaos.

Let’s cut through the mustard and all that jazz, here. We all know that in the fevered minds of the Bushies, their neocon supporters and their far-right fundamentalist Christian allies, this is all about two things, and two things only: hegemony of Christian fundamentalism and complete control of oil productivity.

In other words: defeat of Islam + fall of the Middle East = Holy American Empire.

Conyers: White House Lied About Rove

by- Suzie-Q @ 1:46 PM MST

On a 7-3 ruling, House Democrats moved rapidly Thursday afternoon to rule that the White House had asserted executive privilege in a manner that was ‘not legally valid.’

During the proceedings, a top House Democratic investigator of the firing of nine US Attorneys said that the White House’s latest moves were not consistent with the current system of government in the United States. Another top Democrat accused the White House of turning over ‘inaccurate’ information about Karl Rove’s role in the attorney firings.

The chair of the subcommittee that has authorized subpoenas in the investigation said that the White House was not deserving of ‘blind faith.’

“The White House is asking Congress and the American people to simply trust on blind faith that the documents are appropriately being kept secret,” said Rep. Linda Sánchez, Chairwoman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, during an approximately 20 minute hearing.

She added, “Our system of government does not allow the White House to demand this kind of blind faith and secrecy.”

Breaking: Judge Throws Out Plame’s Civil Suit

by- Suzie-Q @ 1:12 PM MST

The AP reports:

A federal judge on Thursday dismissed former CIA operative Valerie Plame’s lawsuit against members of the Bush administration in the CIA leak scandal.

Plame, the wife of former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, had accused Vice President Dick Cheney and others of conspiring to leak her identity in 2003. Plame said that violated her privacy rights and was illegal retribution for her husband’s criticism of the administration.

Read more on the leak scandal here.

UPDATE: Full opinion is HERE.

UPDATE II: Flashback — Judge John D. Bates, the judge who dismissed today’s suit, also dismissed the lawsuit over Dick Cheney’s energy task force records:

Judge John D. Bates of Federal District Court found that Comptroller General David M. Walker, the head of the General Accounting Office, did not have sufficient standing to sue the vice president.

Mr. Walker had asked the judge to order the White House to reveal the identities of industry executives who helped the administration develop its energy policy last year.

In declining to do so, and in dismissing Mr. Walker’s suit, Judge Bates said that granting the G.A.O. chief’s request “would fly in the face of the restricted role of the federal courts under the Constitution.”

Bush Administration arranged support for militants attacking Lebanon

Video Interview with Seymour Hersh and transcript

by David Edwards and Muriel Kane

Global Research, May 25, 2007

In an interview on CNN International’s Your World Today, veteran journalist Seymour Hersh explains that the current violence in Lebanon is the result of an attempt by the Lebanese government to crack down on a militant Sunni group, Fatah al-Islam, that it formerly supported.

Last March, Hersh reported that American policy in the Middle East had shifted to opposing Iran, Syria, and their Shia allies at any cost, even if it meant backing hardline Sunni jihadists.

A key element of this policy shift was an agreement among Vice President Dick Cheney, Deputy National Security Advisor Elliot Abrams, and Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the Saudi national security adviser, whereby the Saudis would covertly fund the Sunni Fatah al-Islam in Lebanon as a counterweight to the Shia Hezbollah.

Telling Larry King that his investigators are working on 30 “solid” leads of prominent Washingtonians engaged in sex scandals, Hustler publisher Larry Flynt said he is now just trying to decide how he will reveal the names.

The publication date for the names has not been finalized, Flynt said, but Hustler could end up printing all 30 at once.

“The last thing now is we don’t know if we want to let it to drip, drip, drip or we want to go with everything at once,” Flynt said.

Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, a Republican who pressed “family values” issues, admitted he hired a prostitute from so-called “DC Madam” Deborah Jean Palfrey after a reporter from Hustler called his office for comment.

Flynt said his investigators have been cooperating with Palfrey in seeking to expose other hypocritical politicians in Washington, and he took out an ad in the Washington Post last month offering $1 million for information on politicians engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior.
