DOJ Probe to investigate BAE scandal

Gordon Brown faces his first crisis as prime minister a day before he takes the post, following BAE Systems’ admission today that it is under investigation by the US department of justice (DoJ).

The investigation relates to contracts with Saudi Arabia which were under examination by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) before Tony Blair ordered it to stop, citing the national interest.

BAE’s share price fell dramatically following the announcement. One and a half billion pounds were knocked off its stock market value following a ten per cent plunge.

In February, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Seymour Hersh wrote a piece in The New Yorker revealing that the Bush administration was setting its sights heavily on Iran, planning for a “possible bombing attack“:

Still, the Pentagon is continuing intensive planning for a possible bombing attack on Iran, a process that began last year, at the direction of the President. In recent months, the former intelligence official told me, a special planning group has been established in the offices of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, charged with creating a contingency bombing plan for Iran that can be implemented, upon orders from the President, within twenty-four hours.

On Tuesday, Hersh spoke more on the Bush administration’s focus on Iran at the Campus Progress National Conference. He said that President Bush and Vice President Cheney are ignoring the actual intelligence on Iran. The “intelligence community keeps on saying, ‘There’s no bomb there.’ And Cheney keeps on saying to the young briefing officers, ‘Thank you son, I don’t buy that.’” Hersh added, “George Bush’s and Dick Cheney’s wet dream is hitting Iran.”

Watch it:

Hersh also stated that Bush likes to compare himself to Winston Churchill. Sources close to the President have heard him “say things like, ‘It’ll be 20 years before they appreciate me. … Yes, I may be at 30 percent in the polls, but in 20 or 30 years, they’ll appreciate what I’ve done.’”

The OURUS*: Interregnum Or Fait Accompli?

by- Mentarch … 18:11 EDT

(Updated below) (Update II) (Update III) (Update IV)

(*: Office of the Unitary Regency of the U.S.A.)

Regent Cheney: going away or here to stay?

In my previous two articles, I elaborated on the now-established fact that Dick. B. Cheney installed himself as a Regent on January 2001, effectively creating the constitutionally unlawful Office of the Unitary Regency of the U.S.A. – complete with its Puppet Presidency.

Truth be told, it was after 9-11 that Cheney effectively made his move to firmly cement his Regency – driven by his intractable belief in Executive Supremacy. In other words, Cheney seized the opportunity that presented itself with the tragic events of September 11, 2001, in the same manner as he did when then-candidate Bush approached him for the vetting of running mates.

In this respect, Regent Cheney certainly fooled many of us (myself included, I must admit) into thinking that it was his Puppet President who represented a threat to the Constitutional Republic of the U.S. throughout all these years, when in fact he constituted the threat all along.

A stealthy, calculating Master Puppeteer indeed.

Scooter Libby: Inmate “28301-016”

by- Suzie-Q @ 3:00 PM MST

Scooter Libby has a new name: inmate number 28301-016. That’s according to the Bureau of Prisons, which is ready and waiting for Libby’s arrival.

After losing a motion earlier this month to delay his first day in prison, Libby’s currently trying a last ditch appeal before reporting to prison later this summer. If he wins, he’ll remain free until an appeals court decides whether to uphold the verdict against him; if he loses, only a pardon could save him from beginning to serve his 2 1/2 year sentence.

NOTE:  Justice Bloggers, I see Scooter looking more like this…  LOL

The Daily Show offered its take Tuesday night on the swirling controversy about Vice President Dick Cheney’s efforts to define his own role in our government with no consideration paid to centuries of constitutional precedent.

Referencing Cheney’s insistence he does not exist within the executive or legislative branches of government, Host Jon Stewart introduced him as “part vice president, part legislator, half she-wolf, if you will. How else to explain those eight teats?”

The Washington Post on Sunday revealed that Cheney keeps man-sized safes in his office for paperwork.

“Unless workaday business includes needing someplace large enough to stuff a body, why the vice president needs a man-sized safe is unclear,” Stewart said. “Unless he says, hey Johnson, put the papers in this safe, and then stay in there with them.”

Bush expected to make Blair ME envoy

By GIL HOFFMAN AND AP

US President George W. Bush has talked with British Prime Minister Tony Blair about becoming the Quartet’s Middle East peace envoy after he leaves office next week.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s associates, the White House and State Department spoke glowingly of Blair’s credentials on Wednesday but said there was nothing to announce yet. Blair steps down next Wednesday.

“Obviously Prime Minister Blair has been very active and deeply involved in Middle East peace issues throughout his prime ministership,” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. She said Blair and Bush speak often.

“It would not surprise me if they have talked about what Prime Minister Blair would like to do following the end of his term… but we don’t have anything to announce.

Bush Won’t Supply Subpoenaed Documents

by- Suzie-Q @ 9:33 AM MST

WASHINGTON — President Bush, moving toward a constitutional showdown with Congress, asserted executive privilege Thursday and rejected lawmakers’ demands for documents that could shed light on the firings of federal prosecutors.

Bush’s attorney told Congress the White House would not turn over subpoenaed documents for former presidential counsel Harriet Miers and former political director Sara Taylor.

In reaction, Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy accused the administration of shifting “into Nixonian stonewalling” and revealing “disdain for our system of checks and balances.”

“With respect, it is with much regret that we are forced down this unfortunate path which we sought to avoid by finding grounds for mutual accommodation,” White House counsel Fred Fielding said in a letter to Leahy and the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. “We had hoped this matter could conclude with your committees receiving information in lieu of having to invoke executive privilege. Instead, we are at this conclusion.”

Thursday was the deadline for surrendering the documents. The White House also made clear that Miers and Taylor would not testify next month, as directed by the subpoenas, which were issued June 13. The stalemate could end up with House and Senate contempt citations and a battle in federal court over separation of powers.

BAGHDAD — Twenty beheaded bodies were discovered Thursday on the banks of the Tigris River southeast of Baghdad and a car bomb killed another 20 people in one of the capital’s busy outdoor bus stations, police said.

The beheaded remains were found in the Sunni Muslim village of Um al-Abeed, near the city of Salman Pak, which lies 14 miles southeast of Baghdad.

The bodies _ all men aged 20 to 40 _ had their hands and legs bound, and some of the heads were found next to the bodies, two officers said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

The victims’ identities were unknown, but they were found in an area where Shiite travelers have been kidnapped and killed in the past, en route to the Shiite-dominated provinces of Wasit, Maysan and Basra.
