(The following entry constitutes the second part of a short three-part series on evolution, with a tongue-in-cheek approach. Part one can be read here)
Fundamentalists and other denialists of the process of evolution are fond of arguing that it is an invalid science, seeking to undermine it with either theological, ideological or philosophical (non)arguments (three examples among so many here, here and here), or outright non-science, pseudo-science and quackery – like intelligent design or creationism science.
As I put it before: only science is science.
Interestingly, it is a truism that all scientific disciplines are related in various degrees (and I should know, considering what I do for a living – nonetheless, see these two examples here and here, in case you do not believe me). Hence, that is why the fundamentalist/denialist (non)argument that evolution science is invalid, or wrong, is the most ludicrous of them all – not only for its (ahem) fundamental fallacious nature but also for its grave implications.
Not sure? Then allow me to make a list of the scientific disciplines (and/or subdisciplines) which underlie the science of evolution:
We have geology (and related disciplines such as Earth science, environmental geology, geoarchaeology, geochemistry, geochronology, geomicrobiology, geophysics and others), chemistry (and subdisciplines such as analytical chemistry, nuclear chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and others), physics (and the subfields of atomic, molecular and optic physics, as well as particle physics and condensed matter physics) and, of course, biology (and its branches of anatomy, biochemistry, botany, cellular biology, developmental biology, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, biophysics, physiology, zoology, and others).
Now, the only purpose of science is to describe and understand the reality we live in – the universe, our planet, life and, ultimately, ourselves. Granted, much remains to be understood (this is why crazy folks like moi can have careers and contribute to this noble human endeavor) – that is, after all, the nature of science and of the scientific method. Nonetheless, it is from such acquired knowledge that we use (and have used) for all of our (past, present and future) technological advancements – thanks to what we call the applied sciences.
So, here’s the clincher: if the science of evolution is wrong or invalid, then this means that all the scientific disciplines and subdisciplines it relies upon are also wrong/invalid. Let’s give ourselves a quick review of what this means if the fundamentalists/denialists are right on this one:
Physics wrong – then we can’t be having planes, trains, automobiles, satellites, rockets, space shuttles, telecommunications, cell phones, TVs, electricity, windmills, waterwheels, radios, microwave ovens, houses/buildings, boats, sound systems, musical instruments, etc.
Chemistry wrong – then we can’t be having CAT-scans, electron microscopy, gasoline, refrigirators, insulation, plastics, ceramics, nuclear reactors, thermonuclear bombs (someone else blogged about this one already), medications, clothes, paper, metal alloys, CDs/DVDs, X-rays, etc.
Geology wrong – then we can’t be having mines, oil drills, cement/concrete, bricks, dams, asphalt, gemstones, water wells, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc.
Biology wrong – then we can’t be having domesticated pets, farm animals and plants (by the way: selective breeding/cross-breeding constitutes the oldest form of genetic engineering/modification tech – but I digress), diseases (including genetically inherited ones), fisheries, alcohol (beer, vodka, et al.), game reserves, baking powder, surgeries, vaccines, antibiotics, gene therapies, organ transplants, blood transfusions, in vitro fertilization, etc.
Let me put it another way: if these sciences are wrong, then we would not be capable of seeing, speaking and hearing. Furthermore, we would not have computers and the internets. Ergo: I would not be able to type this blog and you would not be reading it.
In short – if evolution is not real, then nothing is, because you can’t pick one science as right or wrong over any other … since they are all interconnected.
So here’s an idea – next time you see a fundamentalist/denialist yapping/blogging against evolution, simply ask him/her this question:
“If evolution ain’t real, how come you can talk/blog about it?“
Then again, maybe everything is magic and we’re all living in a dream …
Nah.
P.S. Of course, you understood already that the very same of what I have discussed herein also applies for the science underlying our understanding of climate change and its effects, right? Good.

May I ask a personal question? Do you believe in God?
Nope – but I do respect all faiths.
It is the fundies against which I am staunchly against – faith is not a danger/hamper to Humanity’s growth and search for understanding of Life and the Universe (and ourselves) through science … but fundamentalism is, because it encourages/enforces ignorance, fear and superstition. Fundamentalism is anti-civilization. Fundamentalism is incompetence as a human being personnified.
😉
Define Fundies for me please. Who falls into that category?
From Answers.com: 😉
1. A usually religious movement or point of view characterized by a return to fundamental principles, by rigid adherence to those principles, and often by intolerance of other views and opposition to secularism.
2. An organized, militant Evangelical movement originating in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century in opposition to Protestant Liberalism and secularism, insisting on the inerrancy of Scripture.
3. Adherence to the theology of this movement.
Islamic shi’ites and Far-Right Christian Evangelicals have this in common: they are the definition of religious fundamentalism.
Oh irony, eh? 😉
So, basically the Far Right Christians? Like those who followed Ted Haggard, Jerry Falwell, etc ?
Yup – that has always been my understanding of them (and their leaders) – from their own words and proclamations: intolerance, self-righteousness, literal interpretation of the Bible, etc.
(including all too often: hypocrisy, deviousness, etc.)
Again – same thing with the Islamic Shi’ites …
😉
Addendum: in fact, I mean “all form of religious fundamentalism”. Shi’ites and Far-Right Evangelicals are the first ones that comes to mind, but there are others out there …
Quackers are another good example … same with Hassidic jews … and so on and so forth.
Okay, thank you. I just wanted to clarify..

Excellent (as usual) article.
I think of the fundies as 1 step below the Taliban social scale, who are simply bullies that want to return to the 7th century.
Much fundie-ism really appears to center around control and pure supression of opposing views. Put simplistically, if you disagree with them, you are a harbinger of the Devil. It doesn’t matter that our Constitution guarantees the right to practice our faith (even if it consists of worshipping pink elephants). We are WRONG if we simply disagree with their skewed (in my opinion again) view of the world. Now my worshipping pink elephants harms no one and is actually no one elses’ business – however the fundies cannot stand any type of opposition.
I put forth the theory that the reason they practice intolerance is simply because they are incapable of proving their own beliefs so they attempt to require I prove my own. Again, none of their business.
I’d also like to make a statement which some might find offensive but it’s based purely on observation throughout my life.
True Christians are very kind people, practicing tolerance and gentleness, attempting to live their lives to their own standards and allowing others the same. The fundies have nothing to do with a true religion that I can see. For some reason, they find it necessary to poke their noses into others lives and pass judgment.
I believe fundies are basically insecure, non-intellectual people who believe their own faiths do not stand up to scrutiny so they must control their environment by undermining other’s belief systems.
The politicals have simply hijacked these rather pathetic sad little control freaks and are using them to obtain votes – and care nothing about what they value. They lend themselves to being manipulated by politicians, apparently because they simply don’t have the intellectual curiosity to question why all of a sudden they are so popular?
And before you ask, I am not sure if I am a believer. I was – but as I became deeply involved in science and medicine, I lost a lot of my faith. I have no problem with God and science blending – we see it every day. I just am wrestling with my own personal views – because I see science at work also.
Sorry to be so long winded – it’s just that people who truly believe in God do not need political validation from gasbag pedophiles…
Hear, hear Basheert!
(And yeah – I forgot to mention the Taliban as another example of fundies -lol-)
Again: religious fundamentalism has everything to to with ignorance and fear – and of course control:

Thanks! I meant to disable comments for that page and so I did now. Oops! The nasty trolls comment is now gone…
Hehe 😉
I won’t tolerate personal attacks against myself or the bloggers on this blog. That was a personal attack against me and the bloggers too.
And then some! (Woah!) That guy was a real Kool-Aid brownshirt … O.o
Kool-Aid Brownshirts are people who just lack imagination, creativity and intelligence.
Fundies are basically throwbacks. Because they cannot understand science, they minimize it.
They do however, utilize physicians and make use of the many science and medical advances that are made on a daily basis.
Result: fundies are intellectual hypocritic mental midgets who pick and choose what suits them at a given time.
