Palin has allowed big game hunters to shoot Alaska's bears and wolves from low-flying planes

By Leonard Doyle in Anchorage | London Independent | Saturday, 6 September 2008

Seen from the air, Sarah Palin’s state is an environmental wonderland. From Anchorage to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, there is a vast landscape of snow-capped peaks, fjords, crystal glaciers, coastal lagoons, wide river deltas and tundra.

The guardian of this wilderness – and Governor of Alaska – has, this week, become one of the most recognisable faces in the world. But behind her beaming smile and wholesome family values is a woman aligned with the big oil and coal firms that are racing to exploit Alaska’s vast energy reserves. In the short term, that has bought her popularity at home.

“I love the woman,” the pilot on our flight shouts over the noise of the engine, “especially what she wants to do with oil, we just have to drill more, there is no alternative. What’s the point of leaving it all in the ground?”

It is a stance that guaranteed John McCain’s new running mate a rapturous reception at the Republican convention this week where the response to the coming energy crisis was a chant of “drill, baby, drill”.

But the woman who could soon be a 72-year-old’s heartbeat away from the United States presidency has an environmental policy so toxic it would make the incumbent, George Bush, blush.

Mr McCain has stressed he is concerned about global warming and has come out against drilling in the Arctic reserve. But, in recent weeks, he has wobbled on the issue. And environmentalists are describing Mrs Palin, who denies climate change is man-made, as “either grossly misinformed or intentionally misleading”.

She wants to start drilling. She wants to block US moves to list the polar bear as an endangered species. And she has allowed big game hunters to shoot Alaska’s bears and wolves from low-flying planes.

The 44-year-old governor says a federal government decision to protect the polar bear will cripple energy development offshore. As a result, she is suing the Bush administration, which ruled the polar bear is endangered and needs protection.

The US Geological Survey says climate change has shrunk Arctic summer sea ice to about 1.65 million sq miles, nearly 40 per cent less than the long-term average between 1979 and 2000.

In such a situation it was unconscionable for Governor Palin to ignore overwhelming evidence of global warming’s threat to sea ice, says Kassie Siegel of the Centre for Biological Diversity.

“Even the Bush administration can’t deny the reality of global warming,” Ms Siegel said. “The governor is aligning herself and the state of Alaska with the most discredited, fringe, extreme viewpoints by denying this.”

Governor Palin would also like to bring open-cast coal mining to Alaska’s Brooks Range Mountains, an act of environmental vandalism in the eyes of many.

The Palin administration has allowed Chevron to triple the amount of toxic waste it pours into the waters of Cook Inlet. This, even though the number of beluga whales in the bay has collapsed from 1,300 to 350 – the point of extinction – because of pollution and increased ship traffic.

On the Republican convention floor she said: “We Americans need to produce more of our own oil and gas and take it from a gal who knows the North Slope of Alaska: We’ve got lots of both.”

The fact that drilling won’t solve every problem “is no excuse to do nothing at all”, she said, putting the country on notice that “starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines … build more nuclear plants … create jobs with clean coal … and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal and other alternative sources”.

Mrs Palin also took a swipe at Barack Obama’s environmental stance saying: “What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet?”

Her support in Alaska relies on squeezing more money for the state from the oil companies themselves. In Alaska, every man woman and child is in line for a bonus cheque of about $2,000 (£1,100) from the state’s massive oil wealth fund. This is, in effect, a vote-buying machine for the would-be Vice-President.

Governor Palin wants nothing to hinder the oil companies. She maintains that polar bears are well managed and their population has dramatically increased over 30 years as a result of conservation. And if the ice should go away, then they will adapt to living on the land.

Many oil companies abandoned Alaska when prices fell in the 1980s but they have been rushing back to drill and prospect areas that are among the least hospitable on earth. That spirit of the Klondike is already in full swing in Prudhoe Bay the epicentre of oil production and one of the world’s largest industrial complexes. It’s so big that BP, UPS and FedEx operate a special fleet of jets from Anchorage just to service to the region.

Hundreds of spills involving tens of thousands of gallons of crude oil and other petroleum products occur in the area each year. Decades-old spills are still a problem and 17,000 acres of wildlife and marine habitat have already been destroyed.

But Prudhoe is just a tiny fraction of the area being targeted by Governor Palin and the oil companies. A similar fate of environmental destruction awaits the entire coastal plain as well as the special areas of the western Arctic – home to migratory caribou herds, musk oxen, wolverines, grizzly and polar bears should a McCain-Palin administration be elected.

The oil boom has attracted oilmen from across America. One of them is Todd Palin, husband to the vice-presidential candidate who works for BP on Alaska’s North Slope.

It is illegal to hunt polar bears, and that is not about to change. But in an area known as “Polar Bear Seas”, from Point Hope on Alaska’s far western edge to the pristine coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, one tenth of the world’s polar bear population is at risk, as well as beluga and bowheaded whales and bearded and spotted seals.

Big game hunters are happy to pay lots of money to shoot wolves and bears from the air. They also chase them across the snow to the point of exhaustion and then land the planes on skis, shooting them from point-blank range. The animals are considered endangered across the “lower 48″ states of America, but not Alaska. The hunters keep and sell the animals’ pelts.

Last year, Mrs Palin proposed offering a bounty of $150 per wolf, as long as the hunter provided the wolf’s foreleg as proof of the kill. The measure did not pass. She even spent $400,000 on a state-funded campaign to block attempts to end the hunt.

Its not just wildlife conservationists who object. Many ordinary Alaskans also condemn the practice as barbaric.

Trish Rolfe, who runs the Sierra Club’s Alaska office, thinks Governor Palin has been a disaster for Alaska’s environment. “The idea that she stands up to the oil companies is a joke,” she says.

“The governor pays lip service to the issue of global warming but denies it is man made. She will not even spend money to help the Inupiaq villages which are about to fall into the sea.”

Toxic about covers it – just for a start.

The Endangered Species Act is already on its’ way out.

I wish the earth would hurry up and reclaim and cleanse itself…electing the Taliban to the US Government isn’t a good thing to be doing.

The potential items of embarassment surrounding Caribou Barbie just seem to be piling up. Here’s yet another:

This is Getting Ugly. New Palin Rumors Fly.

” The latest story the National Enquirer is working on is that Palin had an affair with Todd’s ex-business partner in an Anchorage Car Wash venture.
    [...]
Two days ago, Todd’s ex-business partner filed an emergency motion to have his divorce papers sealed. Yesterday the motion was DENIED. ”

She’s got to be about as comfortable right now as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Does it matter? Look at John McBush’s personal past.

I’m more concerned whether Taliban Caribou Barbie is a threat to women in general, for her views.

For someone so young and religious – this cupcake has a ton of baggage apparently.

I think we should be concentrating on Palin’s record and political views (as this article does), and her foreign policy inexperience, not raking up muck about her past – unless, of course, she has lied or attempted to deceive the public about her personal life.

Mude slinging could dangerously backfire and may be responsible for McCain’s small surge in the polls.

    A Caribou with lipstick… how amusing…

    those Republicans make me laugh!!

anthony – I agree with you.

Although aerial hunting wolves, bears, bunnies .. refusing to list the beluga whale – all these things are issues to those of us who respect the animals that we were given dominion over (according to the Bible – just making a point).

Since when has “given dominion over” meant shooting them with high powered rifles at point blank range for FUN???

Her stance on the environment is more toxic that Dubya. THAT is an issue.

Taliban Barbie is without saying, no friend of anyone or anything I can find, especially women and wildlife.

The Endangered Species Act is a goner…if this one is allowed to get an office. Send her home to her own environment – where they appear to believe this type of barbaric method of wildlife management is the norm.

    Anthony:

The small surge should have been a large surge for McCain…given the number of viewers watching but it wasn’t.
That tells me most were not impressed..

A foreigner who recently visited our country described Americans as being gullible and naive (deficient in wisdom and judgment). His remarks troubled me but today I clearly understand what he meant. Many Americans become easily infatuated with people and things because it appears to fit their perception or because someone tells us we should like it because it is the latest/hottest thing. We become fascinated with this newness because everyone else is and we want to be included in the count. We react this way with new movies, new technology, new autos, new “hockey moms”, etc. We are very predictable for the most part and quick to forget that this “newness” is a fad. We are quick to forget or disregard the real issues and tend to embrace manufactured stories because we are focusing on the hype, distractions and deceit of the fad.

America, please stop being gullible and naïve and start forming your own opinions based upon character and facts rather than prejudice, race, gender, political party or cliché’s. Regards for a person or thing should come with skepticism until you get a better understanding of one’s character and not just an outer core or appearance.

When Palin was introduced to America on that Friday I observed her skeptically then became interested in her character. After listening to McCain’s presentation, many red flags fired off because I have never seen a real “Superwoman” or “SuperMom.” From that moment, I knew that I should take the Republicans’ words with a grain of salt after they ranted and raved about her lifetime fishing and wildlife membership. My research revealed a mediocre educational background, work history and lifestyle. I’ve been re-visiting the websites periodically for new information and found her resume’ and credentials had grown from mediocre to creme de la creme in less than 7 days according to the Republican campaign.

Furthermore, websites containing information about her “True” character, conduct, decision-making skills, abilities, accomplishments, etc. were revoked if the Republicans felt some of the absolute truth would cast a dark cloud and harm their chances of “winning” the election. Out of extreme curiosity, I asked the questions, “What are they hiding and most importantly, Why?” At this point, I only want to hear what her fellow Alaskans have to say about her credentials. I probe further and accessed the Alaska Daily Newspaper (www.adn.com). According to what I’ve read in various media outlets, she is ruthless, inconsiderate, only sees her point of view and becomes revengeful when someone differs with her. Palin refused to support her mother-in-law when she ran for mayor, yet she (Palin) wants others to support her in her efforts.

Although some considered her VP acceptance speech as “a great speech”, I beg to differ and so do many American citizens I’ve spoken to. It was a “Political Comedy Act via Prop Reading” by way of a self-proclaimed, holier than thou party with so-called high morals, ethics and values. Her speech was hypocritical, insulting and completely fabricated especially for a party that’s pretending to want to “Change” Washington, “Fight For You”, “Stand For You”, “Country First”, plus all of the other slogans they can’t decide on during this election.

If that speech was presented by Dave Chappell and criticized the way Palin tried to control and strong-arm the citizens of Alaska (especially the Librarian) during her tenure as mayor, etc., the Republicans will call “Foul” as they always do when the truth leaks out. I resent the fact that the Republicans feel it is appropriate to enhance their accomplishments, deceive the American people and claim heroism while simultaneously discrediting others’ accomplishments, services and agendas, yet they (the Republicans) have “our” best interests at heart or does “our” refers only to Republican.

Frankly, I am disturbed by the fact that Palin embraces a pet-name like “barracuda.” This fish is known as a scavenger that has a bad reputation of being dangerous to humans, but “harmless” unless “provoked.” Webster defines a barracuda as one that uses aggressive, selfish, and sometimes “unethical” methods to obtain a goal especially in business. According to the reports of many citizens of Alaska, this name is very fitting for Palin.

America I ask you, “Is she really the person we want answering the White House hotline at 3:00 a.m?” “Can we trust her to take her RNC speech and her barracuda persona to the United Nations to negotiate deals on behalf of the United States of America?” “Can we really trust her to enhance relationships and respectfully communicate with leaders of other countries?” “Can we afford another 4 years of the Bush-to-McCain and friends Administration?” “Can we afford to continue to loose some American job and outsource others to foreign countries?” “Can we afford to continue to allow the oil and energy companies to “play games” with daily gas prices?” “Can we afford to continue to debate each month about whether to purchase food, medicine, gas or pay for utilities?” “Can we afford to continue to watch mortgage companies foreclose on homes, leaving families homeless and homes sitting on the market empty for several months to years at a time while decaying?” “Can we afford another president who has so many homes (while others are homeless) he can’t tell reporters how many he has?” “Can we afford another president who thinks the economy is improving while thousands of jobs are closing daily?” “Can we afford another president who would rather win a war (because he supported it) than save the families, livelihoods, values and economy of this country?” “How can we afford to give $1 billion to Georgia to help rebuild their country when we are currently $500 trillion dollars in the red?”

Earlier this year, McCain told a reporter, “It is not the duty of government to bail out and reward those who act irresponsibly. . .” In other words, not paying your mortgage because the company you worked for closed or outsourced your department is an act of irresponsibility. Better yet, becoming disabled due to an illness or accident is an act of irresponsibility.

Republicans still “Don’t Get It” because they only worry about how to avoid taxes to keep their money. Guess what? Everyone wants to save more of their hard earned income also. The bottom line is we all need to pay your “FAIR” share of taxes and allow those who really need the help (middle and low income citizens) and opportunity to get a break. I’ve changed parties and you should too.

“CHANGE?” Yes We Can!” with Obama 2008
