President Bush invokes Vietnam as splits emerge with Iraq allies

President George Bush invoked the spectre of Vietnam for the first time yesterday as 15 more American soldiers died and increasing evidence emerged that the coalition of the willing that invaded Iraq four years ago has begun to fracture irreparably.
As the US death toll moved to 3,722, Iraq’s Prime Minister engaged in an angry war of words with his critics in Washington. Meanwhile, a senior US general issued a dark warning that American troops may have to be sent to the south of the country to fill the vacuum left by a projected British withdrawal.
Amid the chaos, an isolated Mr Bush vowed he would “fight to win”, that the so-called troop “surge” was working and that the lesson from Vietnam was that withdrawal had cost millions of lives.

And it comes down to this, Vietnam Redux as we have always known.
Rabid critters are dangerous. I hope there’s enough animal control officers left in the government.
Well here’s that pesky little credibility problem still hanging around. Bush was AWOL and 5-deferment Dick obviously was not involved in Vietnam.
What is the Veteran’s Association thinking???? All these men that served their country – I remember Vietnam…it was NOT a happy time, people were ANGRY about 58,000 dead soldiers and we made it STOP. These VA members had better look back and realize that their quagmire in Vietnam has been replaced by this quagmire in Iraq.
NO comparison.
When Bush offered an analogy to Vietnam to defend his war in Iraq, he set aside some simple facts. The predatory Iraq war has led to the deaths of more than one million Iraqis, the biggest refugees catastrophe in this century, and the destruction and pillage of Iraq.
Of course, such deaths and destruction do satisfy the cravings of a sick sadist. How can the deaths of 3, 722 American soldiers be of any concern to a him? These American losses are small as compared to those incurred in Vietnam where the American losses were around 50,000 soldiers and the Vietnamese around 3,000,000.
So Bush would like to see American losses reach not only 50,000 but even more because he wants to win a ‘total victory’ in a war that can have no time limit.
So, lets see if I get this: according to the Bush revisionist “logic” of no withdrawal without victory, the Vietnam War would still be going on.
Earth to Chimpster: that war was untenable and unwinnable both at home and on the battlefield.
It’s beyond the scope of my mortal mind that some people are stupid enough to still support him.
